LETHBRIDGE – If this winter has felt like it’s been more punishing than usual, there are some statistics to back that up.

Every day from Feb. 3 through Feb. 20 has seen Lethbridge under a weather warning or advisory, ranging from extreme cold to blowing snow to snowfall and winter storms. And that’s just the city, not including surrounding regions that have also had wind warnings during the month.

Following the weekend’s snowfall, the latest threat has been yet another extreme cold warning. The Family Day holiday saw unofficial record lows set in Bow Island (-28.4), Cardston (-29.6), Claresholm (-32.6), Crowsnest Pass (-30.9), Milk River (-30.1), and Waterton (-29.6). The average high for Lethbridge for this time of year is 3 C, and the average low is -9.

February has seen snow fall in waves as well. The most recent measurement for snow on the ground in Lethbridge, for Feb. 18, was 20 cm. The most it’s been this winter was 23 cm, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. There has been substantial snow cover continuously since Feb. 4.

The forecast has temperatures remaining well below normal, but temperature start to moderate by the weekend. However, there are early indications of more snow Saturday night.
