LETHBRIDGE — Traffic on Highway-4 was brought to a standstill on Tuesday (Sept 17) morning as emergency crews dealt with a semi load of hay bales that caught on fire.

Around 10:0-am. the semi came to a stop in the north-bound lanes east of Lethbridge, close to Stirling.

The Stirling fire department was initially called out and was joined by the Warner fire department. Tractors were brought in to push the bales off of the semi’s flatbed.

Coaldale RCMP Staff-Sergeant Glen Henry confirmed to LNN that as the semi was heading north-bound, the driver of a south-bound semi noticed the upper bales were on fire on the north-bound vehicle and contacted the driver.

The north-bound driver pulled over and disconnected the vehicle’s cab and pulled it away from the flat-bed which was quickly engulfed with fire.

There were no injuries and the fire departments were able to extinguish the fire once the bales were pulled apart.
