Agricultural moisture has wide variation across the province

EDMONTON, AB. — With Spring officially arriving last week, the minds of farmers have turned to planting and what impact COVID-19 might have on this year’s seeding.

At this point, Jim Wicket, chairman of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers, says farmers are unsure what will happen when it’s time to plant. There is major concern that the pandemic could result in staff shortages.

The other issue, revolves around the moisture reserves across the province, with some areas looking grim.

Along the east-half of the province, snow pack is below average, while along the west parts of the province, is a bit better.

Soil moisture reserves vary across the province, with roughly 85 per cent of the land estimated to have near normal soil moisture.
Much of Southern Alberta is reporting near normal to moderately low snow pack accumulations in stubble fields, while snow pack water equivalent in those same fields is sitting at five to ten millimetres.

More information can be found in the Alberta 2020 Agricultural moisture update.
