HIGH PRAIRIE, AB – Five people are dead and a sixth is in life-threatening condition following a two-vehicle crash northeast of Atikameg, Alberta.

Mounties from High Prairie, Red Earth Creek, and Faust say they responded to the crash at around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2023, on Highway 750, about eight kilometres south of Highway 88.

Early reports from the RCMP indicate a GMC pickup truck was travelling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided with a southbound minivan.

The RCMP reports that women in the truck, a 36-year-old from Loon Lake and a 30-year-old from Slave Lake, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people in the minivan, a 65-year-old woman and a 51-year-old woman, along with an 11-year-old boy, were also killed in the crash.

A five-year-old girl in the minivan was airlifted to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

All four people in the van were from the Whitefish Lake First Nation in northern Alberta.

The highway was closed for several hours to allow for a collision reconstructionist to investigate.

The RCMP is still investigating and say they are not ruling out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
