LETHBRIDGE: Day two of the trial for David and Collet Stephan, featured testimony from a registered nurse and friend of the family, who also acted as the family’s birth attendant.

The couple is accused of failing to provide the necessities of life, in connection with the 2012 death of their 19-month old son Ezekiel.

Terrie Meynders testified that Collet asked her to take a look at Ezekiel on March 12, 2012, as she was worried about his health. After adjusting her schedule, Meynders and her husband drove to the Stephan’s home. She noted that on the drive over her husband had brought up meningitis.

Once there, Meynders examined Ezekiel, saying she didn’t see anything obvious or abnormal, but suggested meningitis as a possibility. The two of them did some research online, but Meynders explained that she really had no idea what was wrong, and that the Stephans should take Ezekiel to a doctor so they would know for sure. She did acknowledge that he didn’t appear to require immediate medical care while she was there.

It was revealed in court Monday that following Meynders visit, the Stephans continued treating Ezekiel with natural remedies, and didn’t call 911 until he stopped breathing the next day. He died several days later in a Calgary hospital.

The trial continues until March 24.
