Students raising money, awareness of homelessness
LETHBRIDGE – Some hardy University of Lethbridge students are putting a spotlight on homelessness, by learning first hand a little about what it’s like.
For five days, five students are sleeping outside, with no shelter, no showers or extra clothing, and only donated food to eat. During the day they’re roaming campus to collect donations for youth homeless shelter Woods Homes.
“Right now they’re falling $5,000 short on their annual running costs, just to keep the shelter open,” explained Eliza Donnelly, one of the students taking part in Five Days for the Homeless. “Extra money is to get kids haircuts or birthday presents, things that we take for granted.
“They do help children and families as well. It’s from all sorts of backgrounds. Some of them have problems with substance abuse, some of them have mental heatlh problems, or just typical everyday youth.”
