Daylight saving time 2018: clocks move ahead and a chance to check smoke alarms

Mar 10, 2018 | 7:29 AM

LETHBRIDGE –  It’s that time of year, the clocks move ahead tonight.

When the local standard time reaches 2 a.m. clocks will be turned forward one hour to 3 a.m.

The clocks moving forward is also a reminder to take important safety measure to protect your family.

Fire & Emergency Services are encouraging residents to take time this weekend to change their smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries because a working smoke detector is the best tool a person has for surviving a fire.

Firefighters in Lethbridge responded to over 120 calls in 2017 when smoke detectors warned residents to leave their homes and call 911.

A release states that cooking and improper disposal of smoking material were the leading causes of these responses.

The department also responded to eight calls last year related to carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer because it’s an odourless, colourless gas that can be poisonous and even cause death.

Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed where they can be easily heard, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.

Fire & Emergency Services say the time change is always a good reminder to check both alarms to make sure they’re in working order. These detectors often have expiration dates and should be replaced at least every ten years.
