Snail Mail out as Alberta Switches to E-reminders for ID and Licence Renewals

Mar 3, 2016 | 6:48 AM

EDMONTON:  It’s an effort to save money. However the onus is now on the public to remember when licence and identification card renewals are needed.

Effective April 1st, the Alberta government will no longer mail out renewal notices. Danielle Larivee, acting minister of Service Alberta, says the move will save taxpayers $3 million a year.

According to Larivee, mailing government reminders is a dated practice and an unnecessary expense.

However, Albertans with disabilities will continue to receive reminders via the mail and seniors over 70 will receive mailed reminders until April 1, 2017.

The government will make drivers aware of the change in a public ad campaign, and expects registry agents to take a proactive role in reminding drivers when to renew their licence and registration.

Drivers can set up an free reminder by visiting a local registry agent.
