Calgary Stampeders to cover pistol patch on alternate jersey in honour of Hicks

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders will cover the pistol patch that’s on the shoulder of their alternate jersey for the rest of the season to honour former player Mylan Hicks.

Hicks, 23, was fatally shot outside a Calgary club Sept. 25.

The shoulder patch features crossed pistols.

“The Stampeders’ black jersey has been very popular with many of our fans and players since we became the first CFL team to wear an alternate jersey in 1994 and it will remain an important part of our identity,” Stampeders GM/president John Hufnagel said in a statement. “Following the season, we will review all options in regards to potential changes to the design of the jersey.”

Calgary will be wearing the modified version of its black alternate jersey for its remaining home games this year.

Nelson Lugela, 19, has been charged with second-degree murder in Hicks’s feath. He’s currently awaiting trial.

Hicks signed with Calgary in May and was on the club’s practice roster. The former Michigan State star hadn’t played in a CFL game this season.
