Toronto FC players unfazed by Kei Kamara’s twerking goal celebration

TORONTO — Veteran Toronto midfielder Benoit Cheyrou shook his head when asked about New England striker Kei Kamara getting yellow-carded for a weekend goal celebration that included twerking.

The Sierra Leone-born striker thumped home a right-footed shot Sunday to complete a 3-0 Revolution win over the visiting Montreal Impact, celebrating in mild Miley Cyrus fashion behind the goal. Referee Hilario Grajeda was not amused, pulling out a yellow card much to Kamara’s disgust.

Cheyrou was sympathetic to the striker.

“I think there are a lot of rules that can kill the show,” said the French midfielder. “Soccer is a show and sometimes with the adrenalin and the pressure, you don’t think about what you’re doing.”

Toronto goalkeeper Clint Irwin said he was surprised by the card.

“As far as goal celebrations go, I thought that was pretty tame,” he said. “I really hope that we’re not turning into the NFL where you can’t celebrate on the field after a good play. We have to remember that it’s entertainment and people are coming to laugh, to have fun. And we’re getting in the way of that, I think we’re doing ourselves a disservice as a league.”

Toronto striker Jozy Altidore said while twerking would not be in his repertoire, “to each his own, I guess.”
