Canada’s Senior Women’s curling team takes home gold at World Championships

LETHBRIDGE – The Canadian Women’s Senior Curling team has taken home top prize: a gold medal at the World Championships held at the ATB Centre in Lethbridge, after defeating Switzerland yesterday (April 29) 10-5.
 
Led by Skip Colleen Jones, a former six -time women’s Canadian champion and two- time world champion, this marks gold medal number two at a senior’s event for her.
 
“It feels really sweet, to have finished it and to win a world championship – it was such a thrill. It was comfortable having that lead, no complaints. Whenever you win something this big, the euphoria is the exact same, but winning at this age is maybe sweeter than when I won as a 21- year old or a 39- year old.”
 
Meantime, the Senior Men’s team, led by Skip Bryan Cochrane, takes home the silver medal after losing to Sweden in a narrow 5-4 battle.
 
“I’m proud of the way we fought back and made their skip make a really good shot,” explains Cochrane. “At our age, wearing a Team Canada uniform for the first time, it’s a very proud moment for all of us….. we played really well this week.”
 
The senior’s bronze medal goes to Scotland after defeating the US 8-5.
 
In the Mixed Doubles event, Switzerland took home the gold medal after defeating Canada’s Joanne Courtney and Reid Carruthers, 6-5, in a final that came down to the last stone. Courtney says she and Carruthers are proud of themselves.
 
“We came here wanting to get Canada into the Olympics and we did that, and we wanted to get a medal too and we did that. It didn’t work out our way in that game, but we have a lot to be proud of.”

China’s Rui Wang and Dexin Ba get the nod for the bronze medals.
