New skate park under construction in north Lethbridge

Aug 1, 2017 | 3:10 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A new skatepark is now well under construction in the new Legacy Ridge, 73-acre park in north Lethbridge.

Dave Ellis, Parks Manager for the City of Lethbridge, says construction began in May 2017.

“It’s a little bit different style than SLP Skate Park (on Mayor Magrath Dr.), in that it’s a ‘plaza style’ and it’s more integrated into the park. It’s a place where people can hang out if they were skateboarding, but it’s also…. you can sit and watch the boarders as well.”

Ellis says it’s a really exciting part of the new park, located between the communities of BlackWolf and Legacy Ridge, just off of 13 Street North and bordered by Black Wolf Boulevard North, and Uplands Boulevard North.

“It’s designed to be the same kind of park, to serve the same kind of population,” explains Ellis. “So, one of the regional kind of ones…not the big city one that is still in the planning stages.”

Newline Skate Parks, is building the project, at a cost of $800,000, similar to what SLP Skate Park also cost to build. The company, with offices in Langley, B.C. and in Calgary, has built more than 200 around the world.

The third city skate park Ellis refers to, which would be much larger than the two current ones,  is still in the master planning stages and a location has yet to be chosen.

He says the new northside Skateboard Park has yet to be named, but should be completed by October 2017.

The entire Legacy Park area however, remains a construction site, and is closed to the public at this time.
