MD of Taber declares local state of emergency due to overland flooding

TABER – The Council of the Municipal District of Taber held a special meeting Friday night (Mar 23) to declare a local state of emergency within the M.D. of Taber because of overland flooding.

The areas which are included in this Local State of Emergency include the entire area of the Municipal District of Taber south of the Oldman River. 

Currently, the area most affected lies along Highway 3, between Range Road 16-3 and Range Road 17-3 south to Township Road 9-0.

In a statement, the Council states there is an imminent hazard to land, property and infrastructure.

They’ve directed municipal staff to undertake whatever actions are necessary to protect private and public property from damage with a special emphasis on the protection of residential dwellings.

An Alberta Emergency Information Alert has been issued, and the Local State of Emergency will remain in effect until overland flooding has subsided.

The M.D. of Taber is advising landowners to exercise discretion to not make the overland flooding worse by pumping or excavating unnecessarily. Residents can contact the administration office at 403-223-3541 to provide any information which may assist the municipality with responding to this event.
