Wind gusts exceed 100 km/h in several communities

UPDATE 8:40 a.m.: The advisory for Highway 4 near New Dayton has been lifted. The water on the road has receded.

LETHBRIDGE – A spring chinook brought extreme wind conditions to southern Alberta Tuesday, March 27.

According to Environment Canada, the top wind gust was at Brocket, where it reached 115 km/h. Del Bonita and the Waterton park gate recorded top gusts of 107 km/h, with 102 km/h recorded at Lethbridge and Fort Macleod and 100 km/h on the Blood Reserve.

The wind was just one source of problems on the roads, with Highway 22 closed for a time as a result of wind gusts that unofficially reached 130 km/h in the Crowsnest Pass area. Several trucks and other vehicles were blown off the road.

Flooding still causing problems

Water on the road is affecting a 200 ft. stretch of Highway 4 south of Lethbridge near New Dayton. Drivers headed in both directions were being asked to slow down. This in addition to a continued state of emergency in the M.D. of Taber, where the list of road closures now includes:

  • Township Road 9-4 from Range Road 17-0 to 17-1 (NEW)
  • Township Road 8-4 from Range Road 17-4 to 17-2 (NEW)
  • Township Road 9-4 from Range Road 14-5 to 14-3 (NEW)
  • Range Road 15-3 between Township Road 10-0 and 9-2
  • Township Road 9-2 between Range Road 19-0 and 18-2
  • Range Road 18-3 from Highway 3 to Township Road 10-0
  • Range Road 17-2 North of Township Road 10-0

And snowfall was affecting highways around Brooks and north of Calgary Wednesday morning.
