“Spin-a-Thon” raising funds for Ride to Conquer Cancer

LETHBRIDGE – Ahead of the big ride, there’s a virtual ride.

Members of the Jack Ady Cancer Centre’s Ride to Conquer Cancer team took to stationary bikes in the atrium of Chinook Regional Hospital Monday, May 14. The Spin-a-Thon was to raise money for their participation in the 10th annual event.

Assistant team captain Andrea Cox explained the ride is one of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s main fundraisers.

“(It) supports research, it supports my role as a patient navigator, and it supports patients and families,” Cox said. Nearby, two members of the team pedalled as they watched their virtual progress on a computer monitor.

One of them was team captain Brendan Grant, who is embarking on his eighth ride. It’s a very personal mission.

“I lost my father to cancer when he was 43,” Grant said. “Ever since that, it’s been my purpose to give back.”

Each of the 13 riders on the team must raise at least $2,500 to take part in the 200 km ride. Since 2009 the ride has raised more than $60 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, in support of the work done at the province’s 17 cancer centres.

This year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer is set for Aug. 18-19.
