LETHBRIDGE – The official 2018 census results show Lethbridge continues to grow with a population of 99,769, an increase of 1,571 or 1.6 per cent from the 2017 municipal census number.

Mayor Chris Spearman says Lethbridge consistently demonstrates a sustainable, healthy rate of growth.

“This stable growth allows the City of Lethbridge to plan effectively for the future of our community,” Spearman said.

A release states the City of Lethbridge conducts a census each year to provide an accurate count for provincial and federal per-capita grants.

Funding from these sources helps support construction of facilities such as Westside Fire Station and Legacy Park.

“The participation of residents and the commitment of census takers in our yearly census is greatly appreciated,” Deputy City Clerk David Sarsfield said. “Without the cooperation of our residents, we would not be able to collect the information that we require.”

The recent census numbers show the strongest growth took place in West Lethbridge, with 875 new residents in the area, a 2.24-per-cent increase.

– In North Lethbridge, the population grew from 27,453 in 2017 to 27,700 in 2018, a change of 0.90 per cent.

– In South Lethbridge, the population grew to 32,109 in 2018 from 31,660 in 2017, representing a growth of 1.42 per cent.

– Finally, West Lethbridge is sitting at a population of 39,960, a 2.24 per cent rise from 39,085 in 2017.

The City says this snapshot of the city’s demographics helps city departments plan what services will be needed in what areas.

This was the fourth-year census takers used mobile devices to gather information at the door, and the census determines the number of people living in each household as well as their age and sex.
