LETHBRIDGE – The finishing touches are being put in place for the 2018 edition of Whoop-Up Days.

The annual summer fair begins Tuesday, Aug. 21 with the parade, which starts at 10 a.m. at Park Place Mall. The parade will follow the traditional route, emerging from the west side of the mall parking lot. It will then make its way down 3 Street S. to 3 Avenue S. and then proceed east to 13 Street, turning north and wrapping up at 9 Avenue North.

“We’re looking at about 110 entries, which is great,” Doug Kryzanowski, marketing manager for Exhibition Park, said in an interview Monday. “I expect about an hour and a half depending on any delays that would take the parade route.”

The theme for this year’s parade is the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” Rotary in Lethbridge will serve as honorary parade marshals, to celebrate the service club’s 100th birthday in the city.

Road closures will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. affecting not only the main route but 1 Avenue S. between 4 Street S. and Scenic Drive, and 9 Avenue N. between the end of the route and the dispersal area at the Adams Ice Centre. During that time, there will also be changes to transit routes 20, 21, and 22.

The exhibition gates open at 12 noon Tuesday, Aug. 21 only. They open at 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Kryzanowski said people will notice something a little different.

“We’ve changed the layout of the midway, and I know that probably doesn’t sound like very much, but what we’ve done is taken what used to be the back door facing west towards Henderson Lake and Henderson Lake Golf course and we’ve opened that all up now, and those trucks have moved to the far side so they can’t be seen,” he explained.

“Just driving by from Parkside Drive S., it takes a whole different effect and we hope that will encourage more people to come in and have some fun with us at Whoop-Up Days.”

Advance ticket sales end Monday night at midnight at Gas King locations. After that, all ticket sales will be at the gates.
