Tetachuk shines as Hurricanes out-battle Wheat Kings 2-1

Oct 23, 2018 | 10:29 PM

LETHBRIDGE – What a night for Carl Tetachuk.

The 17-year-old Lethbridge native made 34 saves for his first career win, in his first career start, as the Lethbridge Hurricanes defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Speaking to the media after the game, Tetachuk said it was an exciting experience and also gave credit to his teammates in front of him.

“I just had to be mentally prepared and ready to go against a good team like Brandon. It went pretty well, it was a good effort and the team played solid,” Tetachuk said, adding it was special to get the win in front of his family and friends.

The game started off with both teams trying to get their footing, which led to some turnovers and sloppy play but ultimately no goals.

Then at 15:48, Stelio Mattheos was called for high sticking and the Hurricanes man-advantage went to work.

Defenceman Igor Merezhko stepped up from the point and had a shot blocked but the puck slid over to Jadon Joseph who, despite whiffing on the puck, still managed to beat Wheat Kings goaltender Jiri Patera to make it 1-0.

Taylor Ross was called for high sticking not long after, and on the power play, it would be Mattheos getting his revenge as the Hurricanes defence backed off giving him room to drive the goal and put one past Tetachuk to make it 1-1 after the 1st period.

In the 2nd, the Hurricanes had numerous power plays but couldn’t break the 1-1 deadlock until late in the period.

Lethbridge’s top unit went to work, and after a couple of attempts, Taylor Ross finally buried a rebound to give his team a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

Early in the 3rd, the Hurricanes killed off a 5on3 after penalties to Jordy Bellerive and Calen Addison.

From there it was up to Tetachuk to hold his squad in it, and hold them in he did, making a big save with under 10 minutes to play in the 3rd off a turnover by Koletrane Wilson.

When the horn sounded to end the game, it was the Hurricanes skating off with the 2-1 victory.

Shots on goal finished at 35-27 in favour of Brandon, but the specialty teams battle was won by Lethbridge as they went 2-for-4 on the power play while Brandon finished 1-for-4.

Head Coach Brent Kisio says he thought his team was solid, but that they didn’t quite bring the energy like they had in previous games.

“In the 1st period, we showed stints of some good o-zone pressure and playing well. We got away from it at times, but our guys were battling. We didn’t seem to have our complete A game tonight, but sometimes you have to just battle and Tetachuk played real well,” Kisio said.

Just how well did the local kid do in net?

“He was [outstanding]. He made some big saves, I thought he looked under control and he caught pucks when he had to and played it well. For his first game to step in and play the way he did was pretty impressive.”

The Hurricanes record now sits at 6-4-1-2 on the season, and with 15 points the ‘Canes are sitting in second place in the Central Division.

Lethbridge will now head out onto the road for three straight games.

First up is a swing through Calgary on Friday, Oct. 26 for a game against the Hitmen, then it’s up to Edmonton for a showdown with the Oil Kings on Saturday.

They’ll wrap up the road trip in Swift Current to take on the Broncos on Friday, Nov. 2, before returning home.
