New speaker series coming to Lethbridge College

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new speaker series is coming to Lethbridge College.

The series, dubbed “Wider Horizons: An evening with…”, will see distinguished guests visit the school and speak to the public and students.

It’s made possible thanks to a substantial $50,000 donation by Bruce McKillop of McKillop Insurance and Registry Services. He’s a University of Lethbridge alumnus from the time when the school was located on the current Lethbridge College campus.

“The idea was sort of to do (promote) something other than the trades, because I deal with the trades in the kind of business that I did, and we both (McKillop and college president and CEO Paula Burns) thought we need to get a message out somehow communication-wise in terms of the other programs there are here at the college,” McKillop said.

“You’re getting a message out that you’re doing so many (more) things here (at the college) than the trades.”

The speaker for the inaugural event on April 3 will be David Frum, who served as special assistant and speech writer to former United States President George W. Bush in 2001 and 2002.

Frum will touch base on the current political climate and the rise of populism in politics. The ticketed event is open to the entire southern Alberta community. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased for $25 ($20 for Lethbridge College students and alumni) through the school’s website.

The former presidential speech writer will also be offering a separate seminar with students from the Centre for Applied Arts and Sciences on April 4.

“I think for students it really gets to open up opportunities for them,” said Lethbridge College president and CEO Paula Burns.

“I think what we would really like to see is the time that they’re able to spend with the speaker, the dialogue that happens, getting into some debate and really opening up some of that free thinking.”

Burns said that a committee at the school will work with McKillop, and other potential donors, to determine future speakers.

The speaker series will take place annually with various guests coming to Lethbridge.
