Lethbridge MP Harder sponsors e-petition calling for mandatory seatbelts on school buses

OTTAWA, ON – Lethbridge MP Rachael Harder has partnered with a father from British Columbia to sponsor an official House of Commons petition in support of mandatory seatbelts on school buses.

Gary Lilico is a school bus driver, father, and grandfather to three young children. He was motivated to get involved because of the tragic death of Jennifer Nobal, who was tragically killed in a school bus crash in the province of Alberta back in 2008.

Harder says right now in Canada, school buses are not required to have seatbelts, which means our children are without adequate protection if the bus were to roll or be in a collision.

“Mr. Lilico and I are calling on the federal government to take preventative action and put our children first by ensuring seatbelts are installed in every school bus.”

As a school bus driver, Lilico says he’s the only one to buckle up.

“I look in my big mirror at the kids and wonder why the most precious cargo Canada transports is left so unprotected. I launched this petition because the consequence of an accident without seatbelts is life-altering pain and anguish not only for the child but also the friends and family.”

Because it’s preventable, Lilico asks why wouldn’t we do it?

“You can’t put a price on a child’s life! Signing this petition is your voice for the children we need to protect!”

Harder is encouraging all Canadians to sign her petition in support of mandatory seatbelts on school buses to protect Canada’s children better.

The petition will remain open until June 8.
