SafeWalk initiative now offered by Ambassador Watch program

LETHBRIDGE — The downtown Watch program is expanding to include a SafeWalk service. SafeWalk will offer an escorted walk to and from any location within The Watch patrol zone. It will be available to all members of the public, daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Watch Manager, Jeff Hansen, says the service has already been provided on a limited basis.

“The Watch has been informally providing SafeWalks since its inception last month, but now that we have an official phone number it will make the process that much more efficient.”

Hansen noted,“The old ‘there’s safety in numbers’ adage still holds true and whether someone is looking for a quick escort to their vehicle or from one business to another, our volunteers are happy to accompany them.”

To request a Safewalk, residents can contact The Watch at 403-715-WALK (9255). The nearest team of volunteers will then be dispatched to your location and escort you to your destination.

The Watch – recognizable by their red shirts – began their volunteer service with trained patrol members in early May. The territory they cover includes the river valley to Mayor Magrath Drive and 6 Avenue South to 5 Avenue North.
