Alberta youth minimum wage goes into effect Wednesday

Jun 26, 2019 | 3:14 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Effective June 26th, 2019, the minimum wage for students under 18 is $13/hour.

Titled the “job creation student wage”, the Government of Alberta says this applies to youth working no more than 28 hours per week when school is in session.

For anything above 28 hours, the general minimum wage of $15/hour must be paid.

During times like summer vacation and Christmas/winter holidays where school is not in session, students can be paid $13/hour for all time worked.

Employers are required to tell workers impacted by this that they are going to reduce the employee’s wage before the start of the pay period that the lower wage would take effect.

Youth who are not enrolled in school are not impacted by the new minimum wage.
