TOKYO, JAPAN – The designs for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medals have been unveiled and are the first of its kind in the event’s history.

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) worked to collect small electronic devices such as used mobile phones from all over the country.

100% of the materials used for the 5,000 gold, silver, and bronze medals came from used electronics.

In total, approximately 6.21 million used mobile phones were collected, or about 78,985 tonnes, from municipal authorities and shops across Japan.

“We hope that our project to recycle small consumer electronics and our efforts to contribute to an environmentally friendly and sustainable society will become a legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games,” reads a press release from Tokyo 2020.
