Date for fall federal election will not change

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Voters will head to the polls on October 21st, 2019 after all.

The country’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Stephane Perrault was asked by observant members of the Jewish community to recommend that the federal election be moved to October 28th because the original date conflicted with Jewish religious holidays.

“Having carefully considered the impact of holding the election on October 21 on the ability of observant Jews to participate in the electoral process, and having balanced that with my mandate to ensure accessible voting opportunities for all Canadians, I conclude that it would not be advisable to change the date of the election at this late stage,“ says Perrault.

He adds that this is not a decision he made lightly, but believes that voting on October 21st would allow the broadest possible range of accessible voting services to be available to the general population.

In Perrault`s decision, he reports that the vast majority of Canada`s Jewish population is located in 36 of 338 federal electoral ridings. In those, he said it is possible that they could look into local voting alternatives.

“I am committed to continuing to work with the Jewish community to maximize voting options within the existing calendar in ways that are convenient and consistent with their religious beliefs,“ says Perrault.

There are also opportunities for any eligible voters to use advance polls.
