One man in custody after high risk north-side incident

LETHBRIDGE — Police wrapped up a high risk incident in the 800 block of 20 Street North (Highland Park Townhomes), around 10:45 Tuesday (Aug 6) night, with one man in custody.

A statement indicated criminal charges were expected in the matter, with further information provided at a later time.

Members of the Critical Incident Response Team were called out just before 7:30-pm. Officers on scene indicated the incident was confined to one unit within the complex and there was no danger to any other members of the public. However, the public is asked to avoid the area.

Swat team members, with guns drawn, surrounded a unit, which bordered a playground.

Police used a loudspeaker to negotiate with an individual inside the townhouse. They were heard asking the suspect what his preferred method of communication was and asking him to “think of the kids.”

It was not confirmed how many people were in the unit, or if any of them were children.

While it has not been confirmed by police, two individuals at the scene told an LNN reporter that they know a woman involved. They claimed the woman’s boyfriend made a threat against her on Facebook.

More information will be released when it becomes available.
