Two Medicine Hat residents in hospital after Taber police attempt vehicle stop

Aug 25, 2019 | 5:57 PM

TABER — After witnessing a vehicle swerving along a lane around 4:18 Sunday (Aug 25) morning, a Taber police officer suspected an impaired driver and began following a truck on Highway-36, southwest to Highway-3.

The officer followed the truck at normal highway speed for about two kilometers, with his vehicle’s emergency lights and siren activated. However, the driver of the truck accelerated quickly, entered the center meridian, lost control and rolled the vehicle several times. It came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Highway-3.

Taber RCMP attend the scene along with Taber Police and Fire.

A 21-year-old Medicine Hat man, alleged to have been driving the vehicle, was transported to Lethbridge in critical condition and then airlifted to Foothills hospital in Calgary. A 23-year-old Medicine Hat woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Lethbridge hospital in serious condition.

An investigation determined the truck had been stolen from Medicine Hat earlier that morning without the registered owner being aware of the theft. The male driver is suspected of not having a driver’s license and the female passenger has three outstanding warrants in Medicine Hat.

The names of the suspects have not been released as charges have not yet been laid.

As the Taber Police Officer was attempting to make a traffic stop prior to this person losing control of the vehicle, and serious injuries have occurred, the Director of Law Enforcement and the Chair of the Taber Police Commission were notified. Under the authority of the Director, the Taber Police Service will continue the incident investigation and a collision expert with the RCMP has been called in by Taber Police to assist.
