B.C. blocks Alberta’s “turn off the taps” legislation with court injunction

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Province of BC was successful in its application to the federal courts to stop Alberta from halting oil shipments to the Pacific Province.

This is in regards to the inter-border conflicts over the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion, where B.C.’s Premier John Horgan and former-Alberta Premier Rachel Notley sparred over its expansion.

The then-Alberta NDP administration passed the turn-off-the-taps legislation but never enacted it.

B.C. filed a statement of claim in Alberta’s Court of Queen’s Bench this spring, believing the law to be unconstitutional. The provincial court said the issue was under the jurisdiction of the federal courts.

The federal court granted B.C.’s request Tuesday, which means that Alberta’s Minister of Energy cannot enact the law until a full review of it can be completed.

According to the court decision, turning off the taps would have caused irreparable harm to British Columbia and British Columbians.
