Province commits to highway work in southern Alberta, nothing for Hwy 3 twinning

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced $4.4-billion in funding to build and repair highways across the province.

“Our government is focused on creating jobs and getting Albertans back to work. We are keeping this promise by investing in the provincial highway network to improve travel on Alberta’s highways, connect communities and grow our economy,” says Transportation Minister Ric McIver.

“The projects will increase safety for all drivers and support major trade corridors to improve travel for commercial carriers in key industries. They are part of Budget 2019’s balanced plan that keeps our focus on jobs and the economy, while getting our finances back in order.”

Approximately half, or more than $2-billion, will go to projects in Calgary and Edmonton.

The funding announcement did not include anything for the twinning of Highway 3.

In a Q&A with Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews earlier this month, Victoria Chester with the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association asked that the government consider a dedicated program to Highway 3 Twinning, as she believes it will not only help improve safety for drivers, but also to help with economic development. Minister Toews responded to Chester, saying that the capital plan for future budgets is ongoing and that he appreciated learning more about the local perspective.

Some of the more significant highway projects in southern Alberta that did receive funding include:

Highway 2:

• Willow Creek Bridge, 8 km south of Granum
  • Bridge deck rehabilitation – construction
• Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District canal structure, 8 km southwest of Granum
  • Bridge deck rehabilitation – construction

Highway 3:

• Coleman, Bellvue/Hillcrest
  • Signalization – design
• Rock Creek to Lundbreck fencing
  • Wildlife mitigation – design
• East of Grassy Lake and Highway 885
  • 30 km of repaving – construction
• Between Taber and 1 km east of Highway 36
  • 15 km of repaving – construction
• Pedestrian bridge in Lethbridge (More details here)
  • New bridge – construction

Highway 4:

• Between Lethbridge and Highway 3
  • 10 km of repaving – design

Highway 5:

• Between Highway 820 and Highway 62
  • 19 km of repaving – design

Highway 22:

• Between 13 km south of Highway 520 and Highway 533
  • 39 km of repaving – design

Highway 23:

• Between 8 km north of Highway 529 and Highway 542
  • 30 km of repaving – construction
