Communities stand against bullying on Pink Shirt Day

Feb 26, 2020 | 5:20 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Canadians are encouraged to wear pink today.

February 26 marks Pink Shirt Day, an initiative to stand up against bullying. The annual event began in 2007 when a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to schools.

It’s since grown with communities across the country taking a stand.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge & District is one local organization taking part in the event, and is hosting an evening at the Galt Museum.

Their event, called I Stand Against: Abuse & Discrimination is free for everyone and runs from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. tonight. The night will highlight local organizations that offer support for residents who are dealing with issues around bullying and discrimination.

In addition to the event at the Galt Museum, the Boys and Girls Club invited the community to write “I Stand Against” on the back of their hand and post a photo to social media, in an effort to spread awareness on issues in the community.

People across the country can get involved by wearing pink, taking a photo and sharing it on social media with the hashtags #PinkShirtDay and #WhereToTurn.

In Alberta, anyone affected by bullying can call the bullying helpline at 1-888-456-2323. Other supports can be found online via the provincial government’s website here.
