LETHBRIDGE, AB – University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track & field athletes are in Edmonton.

They’re competing in the U SPORTS Championships today (Thursday, March 5) through Saturday, March 7. In all, six members of the Pronghorns club are in the provincial capital.

The event is hosted by the University of Alberta at the Universiade Pavilion.

The U of L suffered a big hit last week when U SPORTS gold medallist in long jump and the 60 metre Sandra Latrace was forced to withdraw from competition due to an injury (sprained ankle). She was ranked first in the long jump and fifth in the 60 metre this season.

Throwers Andreas Troschke and Ben Ingvaldson are the highest ranked Pronghorns in the event. Troschke is coming off his first Canada West gold medal and is ranked second in the weight throw.

The athlete from Olds has medaled at the previous two U SPORTS Championships, including a gold medal in 2018 in the weight throw event.

Ingvaldson is competing in his last U SPORTS Championship this weekend and is ranked third in the shot put with a season best of 16.08 metres. He will also compete in the weight throw as he wraps up his career with the Pronghorns.

Brayden Klippenstein and freshman Xavier Crosby will also compete for the ‘Horns in the weight throw. Klippenstein is ranked eighth with Crosby at 10th.

On the women’s side, throwers Madeline Szabo and Caitlyn Bailes will be competing. Szabo earned her first Canada West medal this year – a silver in the weight throw. She sites 10th in the U SPORTS rankings.

Bailes enters the competition ranked 12th in the weight throw. She earned a bronze at the Canada West Championships earlier this year.

The women’s weight throw opens the meet Thursday (March 5) afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The men’s weight throw is scheduled for Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Ingvaldson will take part in the shot-put competition Friday, beginning at 2:45 p.m. For live results throughout the championships, visit ellistiming.ca/USports.
