Lethbridge County announces 90-day utility penalty deferrals

Apr 2, 2020 | 11:58 AM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – Following the provincial government’s announcement of a 90-day deferral on all utility penalties in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lethbridge County is following suit.

The county said that going forward, they will not charge penalties on utility accounts for the next 90 days, and they will accept late payments for the same time period.

Additionally, water shut offs will not be done for the next 90 days.

The county noted that it’s important to be aware that payments have not been cancelled and accounts will still require payment.

The county is encouraging customers to pay their water bills when they’re due. However, if they’re unable to pay, they will have an additional 90 days to pay without penalty or late fees.

In a release, Lethbridge County CAO Ann Mitchell addressed that it’s “an incredibly difficult and uncertain time”.

“We recognize that some of our utility customers will not have the ability to pay their accounts right now. If you are not currently facing financial difficulties, we ask that you continue making payments to avoid potentially large payments in the future from deferrals,” she stated.

“Utility payments are also critical to funding the County’s operations for our citizens.”
