First Nation gets $32-million grant after it stops opposing dam near Calgary

CALGARY, AB. — A First Nation says it is ending its opposition to a proposed flood-diverting reservoir west of Calgary because it negotiated a $32-million grant from the province.

The Tsuut’ina Nation’s chief and council says in a statement posted to its Facebook page that the money is for flood mitigation, restoration and prevention, among other things.

They also say they still have concerns about the $432-million Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir.

The project is meant to help protect the City of Calgary from a repeat of the destructive 2013 floods by diverting water from the Elbow River to a reservoir that can hold the equivalent of 28,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The reservoir has faced stiff opposition from some local landowners, who would prefer another site further upstream.

The Tsuut’ina statement notes the project still requires environmental approval and that its grant is not conditional on that being obtained.
