Group turns to city council to address concerns over Six Mile Coulee Pathway

LETHBRIDGE, AB- The City of Lethbridge’s Parks Manager Dave Ellis presented the new edition of the Six Mile Coulee Park Pathway project to city council on Monday, after previous concerns were brought up.

The $1.7 million project will see the construction of a more casual walking path in the coulee and an easier entrance than some of the current paths.

Some of the concerns that were originally presented were the environment of the coulee and ecology, and if it would damage any of the land.

It was originally brought to council on March 9th, 2020, and sent back to the drawing board. Now that it’s back, even more concerns have been brought up.

Lethbridge West MLA Shannon Phillips said she has received some criticism and backlash from the mountain biking community over the amount of traffic in the coulee.

Phillips acknowledged the concerns that a shale pathway would damage the already great mountain biking trails, but when Ellis was asked about the trail riding community, he denied the harm that could happen.

“The reality is we’re building three kilometres of pathway and not doing anything to the remaining 30 kilometres of pathway that’s already there… change is hard,” said Ellis regarding the proposed plan.

“This really doesn’t do anything for the mountain bike community, but it doesn’t really take anything away either.”

Ellis added that a time like now, with on-going COVID-19 restrictions in place, is when these pathways and the coulee are being used more than ever, so the project is certainly something to consider.

The Six Mile Park Pathway Project will be decided on by council at a later meeting.
