Farming the Web – new agriculture marketplace is up and running

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Touted as a place to sell anything related to farming and ranching, “Farming the Web” was launched on July 31.

Dr. Surya Acharya, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, and Chair of the Alberta Forage Industry Network (AFIN), helped launch the agriculture marketplace.

Acharya explains that most in the agriculture industry will be familiar with the former “Roping the Web”, which was organized and operated by the provincial government. However, they discontinued the website.

“Then people were complaining about not having the service, which many were using for buying and selling their products. So, the government gave us a grant, and we developed this “Farming the Web” website, which will have similar features to Roping the Web.”

Dr. Acharya says it is user-friendly and includes six different categories, including hay, straw and other feeds; livestock and working animals; pasture and land for rent or lease; farm equipment; services and contracting; and other.

“I think we will be very popular, it’s very useful for everyone and that’s the main reason why we (AFIN) took it on ourselves and took the responsibility to do it.

The website is up and running, but as time goes on and the website attracts more users, the website team will determine what needs to be added or taken away to make it more efficient.
