Alberta privatizing Class 4, 5, 6 driver’s license tests

Oct 22, 2020 | 12:46 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta will soon be distancing themselves from three common driver’s license classes.

Starting December 1, 2020, Albertans will be able to book passenger vehicle road tests directly with local registry agents or through a new online system for tests being conducted after January 5, 2021.

The impacted classes of driver’s license tests include:

  • Class 4: Professional license for a taxi, ambulance, and small bus
  • Class 5: The standard license to operate most cars, trucks, and vans
  • Class 6: License to operate a motorcycle or moped

A media release from the province claims that this change will “repair the damage done” when road tests were nationalized in March 2019. This, according to the government, resulted in half of Alberta’s driver examiners leaving the system and “significantly” increasing wait times.

“We know Albertans have been frustrated with long delays to get a road test,” says Transportation Minister Ric McIver. “Returning to a privately run model will restore a system which Albertans used for years with confidence.”

The online booking system will connect drivers directly to their local registry agent.

Once fully implemented, the government estimates that the privatization of this service will save taxpayers up to $12.1-million per year.

“A road test is a major life experience for most Albertans. This new model will restore Albertans’ confidence that their neighbourhood registry can again provide road tests at the location and on the day Albertans want. More road test availability, especially in rural Alberta, will help people gain mobility and employment,” says Craig Couillard, President of the Alberta Association of Registry Agents.

The new system is based on public survey responses from more than 3,000 Albertans, consultations with industry stakeholders, and a review of road test models across the country.

Road tests can be booked online at the Government of Alberta’s website starting December 1.
