Jan 4, 2021 | 2:15 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you have ever wanted to run for mayor or council in Alberta, you can get the process started now.

Municipal elections across the province will take place on October 18, 2021. Prospective candidates will have to submit their documents to their local government’s office by Nomination Day, which is four weeks prior to election day.

The forms are available at city/town halls as of January 1.

In order to put your name on the ballot, you will have to fill out Form 4 – Nomination Paper and Candidate’s Acceptance and Form 5 – Candidate Information. Contact your municipal office’s CAO, returning officer, or municipal clerk to see exactly how to get copies of these documents.

For the City of Lethbridge, an official told LNN that they are still in the process of updating their Municipal Elections page for 2021. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to email Election@lethbridge.ca for more information.

To be eligible to run for council or mayor, you must be at least 18 years old on nomination day, a Canadian citizen, and you must have been a resident of the local jurisdiction for the six consecutive months immediately preceding Nomination Day.

The provincial government has provided a “Candidate’s Guide” for running for municipal office, which you can read here.
