BUFFALO, NY – It might not have been a win for the Buffalo Sabres, but former Lethbridge Hurricanes standout Dylan Cozens recorded his first NHL point in his league debut.

The Sabres lost 6-4 to the Washington Capitals to start their regular season Thursday evening. In the second period, though, Cozens assisted on a wrap-around goal by Tobias Rieder.

The goal was also Rieder’s first with the team. It cut Washington’s lead to 4-2, but they held it together to take the win over Buffalo.

Cozens finished the game with one point, his assist in the game’s second frame.

He’s been on fire as of late, putting on an impressive performance at the World Juniors in late December and early this month.

In seven games at the tournament, he totalled 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Canada ended up losing to Team USA in the tournament’s championship game.

The 19-year-old was drafted seventh overall by the Sabres in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

The Sabres have a rematch with the Capitals this evening (Jan. 15). Game time is 5:00 p.m.
