Seniors 75+ can book COVID vaccine appointments Wednesday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – More seniors in the province will be able to get vaccinated against COVID-19 shortly.

Staff and residents of long-term care and designated supportive living facilities have already been eligible for several weeks now.

Now, however, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says this is being extended to any Albertan born in 1946 or earlier.

“Given the risk of serious outcomes from COVID-19 for these individuals, we expect there will be enormous demand for immunization. We have increased staffing for Health Link to make sure that any senior who wants an appointment can get an appointment as quickly as possible.”

The key, for now, is to be patient.

Dr. Hinshaw says they are doing everything they can to ensure those who are eligible for vaccinations and want to get immunized can do so promptly.

“With the doses we’re anticipating receiving, all Alberta seniors who want vaccine will be able to get their first dose before the end of March. It may just take a little bit of time to get your appointment because availability depends on the timing of the supply we receive in the province.”

Appointments can be booked by calling Health Link at 811 or through the COVID-19 Vaccine Booking website, which will become available at 8:00 am on Wednesday, February 24.

Family members are able to book on their behalf.

Those with appointments will need to bring a government-issued ID and their Alberta Health Care card.

Those requiring transportation can call 211.

In Tuesday’s COVID-19 update, 180,755 doses of vaccine have been administered across the province. Approximately 107,000 Albertans have received at least one dose, and among those, 73,000 have gotten two shots.
