Jun 10, 2021 | 6:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Thursday, June 10 marks the beginning of Stage 2 of Alberta’s “Open for Summer Plan”, the three-staged approach to lifting restrictions.

The following public health measures are being eased as part of Stage 2:

  • Outdoor social gatherings – up to 20 people with distancing (indoor social gatherings still not permitted)
  • Indoor recreation, entertainment, and other settings (rec centres, arenas, cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, libraries) – open at 30% of fire code occupancy
  • Gyms and fitness studios – open for solo and drop-in activities and indoor fitness classes with three-metre distancing
  • Funeral services – up to 20 people, indoors and outdoors (receptions permitted outdoors only)
  • Wedding ceremonies – up to 20 people, indoors and outdoors (receptions permitted outdoors only)
  • Places of worship – 1/3 of fire code occupancy
  • Personal and wellness services – resume walk-in service
  • Post-secondary – resume in-person learning
  • Restaurants – six people per table max, indoors or outdoors
  • Retail – 1/3 of fire code occupancy (must maintain the ability to distance)
  • Youth activities (day camps, play centres) – resume with restrictions
  • Youth and adult sports – resume with no restrictions, indoors and outdoors
  • Outdoor public gatherings (concerts/festivals) – up to 150 people
  • Outdoor fixed seating facilities (grandstands) – 1/3 seated capacity
  • Work from home order is lifted but still recommended
  • Distancing and masking requirements remain in effect

Stage 2 was triggered after more than 60 per cent of Albertans aged 12 or older had received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose and hospitalizations fell below 500.

As of Wednesday’s COVID-19 update, 336 Albertans were in hospital, 85 of whom had been admitted to intensive care. 66.7 per cent of people in the province had received at least their first shot.

In order to reach the third and final stage of lifting restrictions, 70 per cent of Albertans need to be at least partially immunized.

When that happens, nearly all public health measures are expected to be eased.

Premier Jason Kenney said earlier this week, however, that this will require an additional 115,000 Albertans getting their first shots in addition to the 100,000 appointments already booked over the next week.

At the same time, the province is moving ahead to get more people having their second doses.

As of Monday, June 14, anyone in Alberta who received their first dose in April will be able to book their second dose. Everyone vaccinated in May can start reserving their spots starting on June 28.
