COALDALE, AB – Shovels have hit the ground for a major new project in the Town of Coaldale.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at 18 Street and 20 Ave on Thursday.

Mayor Kim Craig says it represents millions of dollars of private investment and will help to revitalize Main Street.

“We’re thrilled that Shift [Real Estate Investments] is breaking ground on the long-anticipated Civic Square project. This investment into our downtown core is a perfect example of the success of Coaldale’s innovative approach to spurring investment in our growing community.”

Civic Square is set to be developed in three phases.

The new municipal office is part of phase one, taking up parts of the first and second floors, as well as the atrium and meeting rooms. Craig previously told LNN that this should take about a year to complete.

Phase two will see four spaces for commercial businesses with “high profile frontage.”

The third and final phase will include a new outdoor space that will serve as “a hub for festivals, markets, and other community events while also providing parking for Coaldale’s expanding downtown.”

“As a resident of Coaldale, I’m thrilled to be a part of the tremendous momentum and opportunity in the Town, particularly in the downtown core,” said Chet Oberkisrch, Managing Director at Shift. “Civic Square will not only be a new commercial centre in Coaldale; it also has great potential to double as a vibrant, multi-use space where everyone can gather, visit, and celebrate in the heart of the community.”

Civic Square has proven to be a controversial issue in Coaldale, as some residents voiced concerns last year about a perceived lack of consultations and information being made public.

A public-private partnership model was used for the facility. The Town’s investment is estimated at $2.8-million.
