LETHBRIDGE, AB – One of the biggest financial contributors to the community has passed away.

In a Facebook post from the YMCA of Lethbridge, they say Cor Van Raay died on July 29, 2021. He was 85 years old.

A successful business operator, he was known for donating significant amounts of money to causes in the area that he cares about.

Perhaps most significantly, he gave $3.75-million to the YMCA for their new west side facility, which was eventually named after him.

Among his many other gifts, Van Raay donated $1-million to the LINK Regional Pathway that will connect Lethbridge and Coaldale, as well as $100,000 to the Interfaith Food Bank last year.

“His generosity has left an incredible legacy and the opportunity for thousands of people in the Lethbridge community to access affordable wellness programs, services and facilities. As a member, Cor always delighted staff with his infectious smile and warm nature. His passing weighs heavily on all of us in the YMCA community,” reads part of a statement from the YMCA.
