Above-normal conditions expected for fall after hot summer in Alberta: Environment Canada

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Mother Nature brough the heat to Lethbridge this summer.

Along with the whole province, the city was hit with multiple heat warnings and heatwaves over the last couple of months. Meteorologist Alysa Pederson, with Environment and Climate Change Canada told LNN that yes, “it was a much warmer than normal year in a lot of Alberta.”

She said one of the more notable heatwaves to hit YQL this summer was at the end of June, noting that “there was actually five days in a row that Lethbridge broke a daily temperature record.”

“We were sitting with temperatures in the 36 [degrees Celsius] to the highest record broken [at] 37.9 on July 1, so there’s been a lot of heat warnings and a lot of heatwaves.”

She remarked that the agency was forecasting a weather event around the July 13th to 16th period, but wildfire smoke from British Columbia “actually dampened the heat in the province, so we didn’t break any daily temperature records, but we came close those days as well.”

To end off the month of July, Lethbridge also broke a heat record from over 100 years ago for July 31, hitting a high temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead, Pederson said this week should see normal seasonal temperatures, which is around 24 degrees Celsius.

She told LNN that, “as we go further into September, that’s when we can kind of expect to see more of a fall pattern, so with the normals dropping, we anticipate that we’re starting to slide into fall by September here.”

Pederson is also hopeful the region will get more precipitation than it did during the mostly dry summer months.

“Our long-range forecast, our seasonal forecast, is kind of indicating, you know the August-September to October period should be likely above normal, but at this time, above normal is still going to be a fall pattern, but yeah, hopefully we get a little bit more precipitation than we’ve had through this summer.”
