AHS reports eight COVID deaths in one day, 1,315 new cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,315 cases were confirmed across the province, which is one of the largest single-day totals the province has seen in several months. That brings the total to date to 254,245 with 12,290 cases being active and 239,572 people having recovered.

In the South Zone, 140 people tested positive with 43 in Medicine Hat, 26 in Cardston County, 15 in Lethbridge, and 12 in the M.D. of Taber.

The number of active infections in the South Zone went up by 52 over the past day.

Since yesterday’s update, eight Albertans died from COVID including two each in the South, Calgary, and North Zones and one each in the Central and Edmonton Zones. To date, 2,383 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of Medicine Hat and Cardston County.

Provincially, 465 patients are currently hospitalized including 107 who have been admitted to intensive care.

“Of the 358 in non-ICU, 81.1% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 107 in ICU, 91.6% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated,” reads a statement from the Alberta Government.

  • Calgary Zone – 101,925 cases, 3,368 active
    • 120 in hospital, 34 in ICU
    • 718 deaths (two new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 84,002 cases, 3,838 active
    • 163 in hospital, 43 in ICU
    • 1,119 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 30,147 cases, 2,280 active
    • 57 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 214 deaths (two new)
  • Cental Zone – 23,135 cases, 1,503 active
    • 64 in hospital, 11 in ICU
    • 183 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 14,987 cases, 1,266 active
    • 61 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 149 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of new cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 5,214 cases (15 new), 195 active, 40 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,941 cases (five new), 81 active, four deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,710 cases (eight new), 53 active, 11 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,562 cases (six new), 61 active, 25 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 2,465 cases (43 new), 525 active, 30 deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,629 cases (six new), 81 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,353 cases (eight new), 51 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,187 cases (26 new), 124 active, 21 deaths (one new)
  • M.D. of Taber – 659 cases (12 new), 68 active, six deaths
  • Cypress County – 501 cases (six new), 88 active, one death
  • County of Warner – 491 cases, 15 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 406 cases (seven new), 39 active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 344 cases (three new), 20 active, six deaths
