Brooks Mayor Barry Morishita acclaimed as new leader of Alberta Party

BROOKS, AB – Brooks Mayor Barry Morishita has been officially named as the new leader of the Alberta Party.

Morishita was the only person to put his name forward for the position and was acclaimed by the party Wednesday.

Speaking to CHAT News last month, Morishita said, if he becomes leader, he wants to visit every community in the province before the provincial election in 2023.

He believes Alberta’s two major political parties are too rooted in ideology. The Alberta Party appeals to him because it is rooted in community and wants to bring a different way of making decisions and governing to the province.

“Whether it’s health-care, education, economic development, social services, there are unique communities in Alberta,” said Morishita.

The party held three seats in the legislature when the 2019 election was called and lost all of them.

He told Brooks City Council his plans on Aug. 16, the same day he resigned as president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association.

In the 2019 provincial election, the Alberta Party received nine per cent of the overall votes but lost all three of its seats in the legislature.
