FORT MACLEOD, AB – Brent Feyter is looking to earn his second full term as the mayor of Fort Macleod.

He’s confirmed his intention to run for re-election in October’s municipal vote. Feyter told LNN that during this outgoing term, “council worked well together to be able to get a lot of good things done, and I’m looking forward to being able to continue that with the new council.”

“It’s important for a town to ensure that we have a continuance of leadership, so not a lot of change-over every four years, perhaps. There are good opportunities in Fort Macleod to come and we’re looking forward to that.”

Prior to serving as mayor, Feyter served one term as a town councillor. For this upcoming municipal election, he said a boost to housing in Fort Macleod is a priority, along with continuing to build strong relationships and a “sense of community”. Feyter said the last four years have been very productive when it comes to successful infrastructure projects, and that’s something he would continue on with if re-elected mayor.

He listed some of those highlights over the last four years as, “the completion of our town office, new swimming pool, upgrading a lot of the town facilities, getting more of a system in place for routine upgrades of pavement and sidewalks, a business incentive plan that’s been in place.”

The tax incentive program for businesses was announced last summer. Companies looking to set up shop in Fort Macleod, or who are expanding their current business, can qualify for a 100 per cent tax exemption in their first year, 75 per cent in the second, and 50 per cent in their third year.

Feyter commented that “it gives the businesses an opportunity to get used to their new facility and establish themselves before paying the full tax rate.”

“Last year, we did have, I believe, one applicant – based mostly on the timing, but I’m sure we’ll see a few more this year. On the east end of town, we do have a new car wash so that was something that came from out of town, a new Dairy Queen, so things like that.”

He said that it’s the town’s “way of saying thank you for investing in the community.”

Further details about the program are available here.

Feyter also addressed the switch over of Fort Macleod’s electrical system to Fortis Alberta, noting that’s been a successful initiative.

He said, “that was a hard decision for the council to make, but since that time, Fortis has done well for the town.”

Feyter added that Fortis has “a pretty aggressive plan to continue upgrading our electrical infrastructure in Fort Macleod.”

As of this publication, Feyter is the only mayoral candidate in Fort Macleod.

General voting day for the 2021 municipal election is October 18.
