LETHBRIDGE, AB – A school in Lethbridge was briefly locked down Monday after a gunshot was heard nearby.

At approximately 3:15 pm an officer on patrol heard what he believed to be a gunshot in the area of the 2200 block of 7 Ave South.

“Witnesses were quickly located and it was confirmed that a male subject had shot a round from a rifle,” the police press release reads.

The area was immediately blocked off to search for the subject and officers attended schools in the area to work with staff and ensure the children were safe.

An official with École La Vérendrye confirmed there was a short lockdown as a result and students hid for a short period.

A 27-year-old male suspect was quickly located and arrested without incident.

Police confirm there is no ongoing threat or concern in the area and no injuries have been reported at this time.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
