LETHBRIDGE, AB. — An on-going police investigation into a gun shot incident on Monday (Sept 20) afternoon has resulted in multiple charges against a 27-year old Lethbridge man.

While dealing with a motor vehicle collision around 3:15-pm, a Lethbridge Police officer heard what he believed to be a gunshot in the area of the 2200-block of 7 Avenue South. A vehicle was witnessed leaving the scene westbound on 7 Avenue.

Witnesses told police that a man had shot a round from a rifle and then left the area on foot. The area was cordoned off to search for the subject and School Resource Officers attended nearby École La Vérendrye francophone school to work help staff ensure students were safe.

The suspect was quickly located and arrested without incident. A firearm was also recovered.

Investigators believe the subject was involved in a confrontation with the occupant of the vehicle which was seen leaving the scene. The two subjects are known to one another and it’s believed the shot was fired in the direction of that vehicle, although no round has been recovered.

Rauiri McGinnity, has been charged with: careless use of a firearm; intentional and reckless discharge of a firearm; possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public; discharge firearm with intent to injure; and mischief.

McGinnity was remanded in custody while awaiting scheduling of a court appearance.
