CLARESHOLM, AB – The incumbent mayor in Claresholm has big ideas for the small Southern Alberta town.

Doug MacPherson hopes to enter his second term at the head of town council following October’s municipal elections.

With three terms as a councillor before entering the mayor’s seat, he believes he has accomplished a lot in that time.

“Our economic development is doing especially well and we’ve been able to upgrade a lot of our infrastructure and a new town office in town, and I feel like there’s still more that we can do to enhance our community, so I feel like I’ve got more to contribute.”

He told LNN that continued economic development would be his top priority were he to be elected again.

One challenge MacPherson would like to address is Claresholm being “landlocked” in that many of the surrounding areas are privately owned and the owners are not ready to develop just yet.

He also wants to see things pick up with the Rural & Northern Immigration Pilot, which initially saw a lot of momentum.

“Our economic development before COVID hit had attracted a lot of interested parties to come our direction because our tax base is low, we have people available for our workforce, and our Economic Development was able to secure the immigration pilot so we are able to bring immigrants to Claresholm to work.”

General voting day for the municipal election is October 18.
