1,651 new COVID cases in Alberta, active infections down slightly

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

1,651 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 288,357. Of those, 20,040 cases are active while 265,695 people have recovered.

Among those new cases, 69 per cent were unvaccinated, as was the case for 70 per cent of all active cases and 76 per cent of those who are hospitalized with COVID-19.

In the South Zone, 134 people tested positive with 56 in Medicine Hat and 24 in Lethbridge.

Active infections across the region were down by 22.

Since yesterday’s update, 11 Albertans died from COVID with five in the Central Zone and two each in the South, Calgary, and North Zones. To date, 2,622 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 1,061 patients are currently hospitalized including 243 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 110,970 cases, 5,105 active
    • 279 in hospital, 66 in ICU
    • 769 deaths (two new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 93,361 cases, 5,461 active
    • 323 in hospital, 108 in ICU
    • 1,168 deaths
  • North Zone – 36,501 cases, 3,582 active
    • 142 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 256 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 28,953 cases, 3,716 active
    • 189 in hospital, 25 in ICU
    • 239 deaths (five new)
  • South Zone – 18,521 cases, 2,156 active
    • 128 in hospital, 32 in ICU
    • 190 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 5,905 cases (24 new), 454 active, 45 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,174 cases (seven new), 137 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,936 cases (10 new), 150 active, 13 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,785 cases (five new), 161 active, 27 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 3,618 cases (56 new), 680 active, 49 deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,861 cases (10 new), 136 active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,574 cases (seven new), 137 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,425 cases (five new), 120 active, 23 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 957 cases (seven new), 175 active, 10 deaths
  • Cypress County – 711 cases (three new), 119 active, three deaths (one new)
  • County of Warner – 591 cases (three new), 76 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 509 cases (one new), 56 active, eight deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 433 cases (three new), 50 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 363 cases (three new), 47 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 232 cases (four new), 49 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 122 cases (one new), 14 active, one death
  • Waterton – Seven cases, zero active, zero deaths
