Olympic wrestler Jasmine Mian elected to Calgary city council
CALGARY — Newly elected Calgary city councillor Jasmine Mian joins several Olympic and Paralympic athletes who have run for political office in Canada and won in recent years.
Mian, an Olympic wrestler in Rio in 2016, follows federal MPs Adam van Koeverden (kayaking), Lyne Bessette (cycling), Carla Qualtrough (Paralympic swimming) and B.C. MLA Michelle Stilwell (Paralympic track and field) into public office.
Evan Dunfee, a racewalker who won an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo this past summer, has indicated an interest in running for city council in Richmond, B.C.
“He messaged me a little while ago and was just very encouraging of me, and said ‘I’m thinking of running,'” Mian told The Canadian Press.
